Pre-departure checklist (say it out loud)

1) NSW National Parks park page + alerts for Ku-ring-gai Chase. 2) RFS fire danger rating and total fire ban status. 3) West Head gate times if using that road — screenshot and alarm. 4) Park’nPay / vehicle pass ready before reception drops. 5) Ferry timetable and last return if Basin-bound. 6) Weather, heat and UV plan. 7) Water volumes and turnaround rules spoken aloud with the whole group.

If any item fails, demote the plan immediately: lookouts over long loops, Bobbin Head over West Head, commercial stay over unbooked Basin, train-enabled short walk over full GNW sample. Demotion is competence, not failure.

Re-check the same morning even if you checked last night. Wind shifts, fire ratings and temporary closures can move faster than a packed picnic basket.

West Head gates as a non-negotiable clock

West Head Road access is gate-managed. Commonly cited hours sit around 6am–8:30pm in daylight saving and 6am–6pm otherwise — useful only as a memory hook. Official hours for your date win every argument, including arguments with your own photography ambitions.

Build 30–45+ minutes of buffer for the drive out after you finish walking. Traffic, toilets, lost kids and “one more lookout photo” all consume margin. Getting locked in until reopening ruins sleep, safety margins and relationships.

Gate discipline pairs with every peninsula activity: lookout-only, America Bay, Resolute, Aboriginal Heritage Walk and Basin walk-in. If the activity cannot finish with buffer, cut the activity — not the buffer.

Fire danger, Park’nPay and entry realism

Use NSW RFS official channels for fire danger ratings and total fire bans, plus NSW National Parks for park-specific alerts, track closures and fire rules. Solid-fuel fires are commonly heavily restricted or banned in many park contexts — verify and obey rather than improvising “a small one.”

Vehicle entry fees generally apply. Park’nPay (or the current official method) should be sorted before you commit to a long walk with no reception. Screenshot payment confirmation. Do not assume every car park has a ranger booth waiting to educate first-timers.

Crowds are an access issue too: full car parks at Bobbin Head and West Head create illegal parking pressure and stress. Arrive early or change the plan. A delayed start is not a reason to break road rules.

Demotion rules that keep trips successful

Red fire danger or active bans that affect your activity → cancel long walks; reconsider the day entirely if park messaging says so. Thin gate margin → lookout only or skip West Head. Kids melting / heat climbing → Bobbin Head facilities and short boardwalks. No Basin booking on a peak weekend → do not gamble on vacancies; pick another beach day or book a commercial stay nearby.

Unpatrolled beaches (including The Basin) and cliff edges park-wide demand personal judgment. This planning layer is not paranoia — it is how near-Sydney national parks stay enjoyable when thousands of people share the same sunny Saturday.
