Northern Beaches bases pair beautifully with West Head views and Basin ferry logistics. The mistake is treating proximity as unlimited daily capacity. Parking, ferries, gates and heat still bite — Palm Beach on a sunny Saturday is a logistics sport, not a casual side quest.

Who should pick this: visitors sleeping in Palm Beach / Avalon / Mona Vale (or similar), people who want West Head plus either Basin or Barrenjoey without living in the car, and groups willing to book The Basin early via NSW National Parks if camping is the dream. Who should pick something else: pure car-free travellers (use the PT plan), or first-timers with only one short half-day (use classic first visit or family Bobbin).

If The Basin is sold out, sleep commercial and day-visit — that is still an excellent trip. This site does not take camp bookings or commissions on park fees. Peak weekends and school holidays need booking urgency for both camping and popular stays.

  2. Day 1 morning–afternoon

    West Head Lookout + optional moderate add-on

    Main lookout first. Optional America Bay if cool and margin allows. Optional Aboriginal Heritage Walk only for fit groups who accept a fuller day — do not also plan a hard Day 2.   3. Day 1 evening

    Northern Beaches dinner · early night

    Celebrate views. Charge devices. Re-check Day 2 weather, fire danger and ferry. If anyone is heat-wrecked, demote Day 2 to a beach walk and coffee — say it out loud so nobody “surprises” the group at 7 am with a stacked plan.

    Palm Beach / Avalon / Mona Vale stay OR The Basin camp

    Commercial accommodation via normal booking channels when not camping. Basin campers: quiet hours, no solid-fuel fires outside rules, wildlife distance, unpatrolled swim caution, headlamp ready.     The Basin ferry day (if logistics green)

    Palm Beach early for parking and ferry. Dry bag essentials. Day visit or continuation of camping exit. Do not miss return windows. Skip Barrenjoey if the ferry day already used the group’s patience. Verify operator and timetable the same morning — commonly cited services still change.

  6. Day 2 option B

    Barrenjoey Lighthouse climb (if Basin not the play)

    Moderate headland climb from Palm Beach access — verify current track and any interior/tour access if that matters to you. Cliffs and heat are real; water on from the first step. Pair with a lazy Northern Beaches afternoon — not a rushed West Head encore after the climb.

  7. Day 2 late

    Optional soft finish · travel home

    Swim at a patrolled beach if conditions suit, or rest. Resist “one more park road” unless energy is genuinely high and gates allow. Travel home without empty tanks or empty water bottles. Debrief which pairing worked for a future trip.
