  1. Night before

Pre-write a turnaround time on a note in your bag. Phone shooters: enable RAW if available and clear storage. Decide Plan A (West Head only) vs Plan B (Basin morning if booked).

  2. Morning (campers at The Basin only)

    Shoot early side light on sand, lagoon reflections and eucalypt trunks. Respect other campers’ privacy and quiet hours — no drone theatrics over tents, no wallaby baiting for frames. Keep wildlife distance. Pack carefully before the light gets harsh; dry bag phones and bodies near water. Day-trippers: skip this block unless you have a real ferry/day-visit plan that does not invent access.

  3. Late morning (optional)

    If moving from Basin/Palm Beach toward West Head, eat and rehydrate. Do not sprint from ferry to headland without water. If you are a day-tripper starting fresh, use this slot for Bobbin Head estuary textures only if you still have gate margin for West Head later — otherwise skip straight to West Head and protect the exit clock.

  4. Early–mid afternoon

  6. Pre-gate forced exit

    Pack down 30–45 minutes before lock with traffic buffer. Secondary “just one more” frames are how professionals look amateur. Review selects later at coffee — not at the gate. If light is still beautiful at exit, shoot from a legal roadside pull-off outside the locked section only if safe and signed parking allows.

  • Lens cloth + blower (sandstone grit + salt air)
  • Dry bag or rain cover for ferry/beach
  • Water 1.5–2 L+ and hat — lookouts are exposed

Parking & access tips

  • Weekday light is calmer for tripods and composition space.
