Success is happy kids and adults at the car with water left — not maximum kilometres. Bobbin Head is the default family product in Ku-ring-gai Chase: toilets, shade, picnic tables, mangrove boardwalks and room to reset. Treat it as the destination, not a warm-up for a forced peninsula marathon.

Who should pick this: families with young children, mixed-mobility groups, grandparents, first park visits with uncertain fitness, and anyone recovering from a long drive. Who should pick something else: fit walkers chasing the Aboriginal Heritage loop, photographers reverse-planning West Head golden hour, or campers with a Basin booking (use the overnight plan).

What to verify: park alerts, weather, RFS fire danger, and vehicle entry / Park’nPay readiness. If you might add West Head later, also screenshot commonly cited gate hours — but do not promise kids a lookout you will cancel under heat. Sphinx Memorial is an optional easy heritage stop, not a mandatory second act.

    Early arrival · Park’nPay · toilets first

    Beat the worst of weekend parking. Confirm vehicle entry payment. Toilets and sunscreen before anyone “runs to the water.” Claim a picnic table if you need a base camp for bags and tantrums. If the area is full, have a backup (return later, shorter visit, or a different signed picnic area) — do not invent parking on vegetation.

  3. 08:45–11:00

    Mangrove boardwalk loops at kid pace

    Easy signed boardwalks and short loops only. Snacks often; shade breaks every stretch. Point out mangroves, birds and estuary life without forcing a nature lecture. Pram-aware: stick to surfaces that match your pram’s reality — do not invent a “quick” rocky spur. The weakest walker sets pace without apology.

  4. 11:00–12:30

    Long lunch · rest · heat buffer

    Real food, water top-ups, quiet time. Decision gate: if anyone is overheating, overstimulated or limping, this is the whole day — pack up winners. Optional games in shade beat “just one more track.” Adults: resist the phone map of every nearby trail.

  5. 12:30–14:00

    Optional Sphinx Memorial (easy second stop only)

    Only if the group still has goodwill. Short visit for the memorial and easy surroundings — verify current access notes. Keep it brief. If kids are done, skip entirely; the memorial will still exist next year. Do not bolt Sphinx onto a tired group to “get value from the entry fee.”

  6. Optional afternoon

    West Head Lookout only if all margins green

    Green lights required: cool-ish weather, happy kids, remaining gate margin, adult energy for another car move. Main lookout platforms only — no America Bay, no Grade 4 cultural loops, no “quick” side spurs. If any light is amber, drive home. Locked-gate family days are memorable for the wrong reason.

  7. Exit

    Ice cream / home · honest debrief

    Leave before meltdown o’clock even if the sky is still beautiful. Note what worked (arrival time, snack rhythm, who needed shade). Next visit can upgrade; this visit’s job was a positive first imprint of the park.

  • Water for every person (kids dehydrate quietly) + spare bottle in the car
  • High-frequency snacks; lunch that survives a warm bag
  • Hats, SPF, spare long-sleeve layer, insect repellent

  • “We’ll just drive around and see” without a toilet and snack plan.
