Who should pick this: campers who accept compact shared spaces, early packing discipline, and either ferry timetable stress or a steep walk-in with loads. Decide ferry vs walk-in before you pack. Ferry from the Palm Beach side is kinder for most first-timers when operating; walk-in via Basin Track from the West Head side is legitimate but steep with packs — verify current official distance, grade and status. Cars do not drive onto the beach campground.

Verify current ferry operator, timetable, landing fees, campground rules, fire restrictions and park alerts the week of travel and again the morning you go.   4. Day 1 afternoon–evening

    Unpatrolled swim only with caution, ability and conditions — if in doubt, stay dry. Never feed swamp wallabies or other wildlife; pack food securely. Headlamp ready before dark. Quiet hours matter in a compact campground; this is not a party beach.

  5. Night 1

    Sleep system · tide/wind awareness

    Warm layer even after hot days — estuary nights cool. Secure loose items if wind rises. No midnight “exploratory” walks without headlamps and a sober plan. Keep a written note of morning ferry or walk-out timing on paper, not only in a dying phone.

  6. Day 2 morning

    Morning light · pack-out · ferry window or climb-out

    Do not miss return ferry windows — missing the last boat is a safety and logistics problem. Walk-out is harder with fatigue: start early, rest on climbs, protect knees. Leave the site cleaner than you found it. Optional Barrenjoey or West Head Lookout only if energy and logistics allow after a clean exit — never as a rushed stack that risks the ferry or gate.

  7. Day 2 late

    Food, fluids, feet. Explicitly cancel “quick West Head sunset” ideas unless you truly have surplus energy, a vehicle plan and gate margin. Most groups should celebrate the overnight as the main product and demote extras.
