Half to full day (West Head gate-aware)

Aboriginal Heritage Walk + Resolute focus

Best for: Fit walkers prioritising cultural landscape on the West Head peninsula

A respectful Grade 4 Aboriginal Heritage Walk day from Resolute with Red Hands Cave and engraving sites — gate-aware, look-only culture, optional lighter Resolute options if the full loop is too much, and no same-day America Bay hero stack.

This is not a casual boardwalk day. The Aboriginal Heritage Walk is commonly graded harder (Grade 4 class terrain in official materials — verify current grading and length on NSW National Parks). Plan water, footwear, heat buffers and West Head exit margin as non-negotiables. Cultural respect is absolute: never touch rock art or engravings; stay on the signed track; keep voices low at sites.

Who should pick this: fit walkers who already know Bobbin Head / West Head Lookout icons, people visiting specifically for cultural landscape, and groups that will honour turnaround time. Who should pick something else: first-timers seeking facilities only, pram groups, anyone in heat without fitness, or visitors who treat rock art as a photo prop.

Acknowledge Traditional Owners including Garigal / Garrigal and Terramerragal / Darramuragal connections to Country. This guide is independent and does not speak for Traditional Owners or NPWS. Use only public interpretive material; do not invent or retell restricted sacred knowledge.

Verify the official Aboriginal Heritage Walk page, West Head gate hours, park alerts and RFS fire danger the morning you go. After rain expect slippery rock and slower times. Demotion culture: a shorter signed Red Hands option (when available) or Resolute picnic only still counts as a successful cultural day — full-loop ego does not.

Track status, gate times, fire danger and weather change — verify on NSW National Parks and RFS before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. 06:45–07:30

Gate hours · water · cultural briefing

Confirm today’s West Head gate schedule offline. Fill 2 L+ water per person. Brief the group before leaving home: look only, never touch art or engravings; no climbing or rubbing; stay on track; quiet at sites; no off-track “better angle.” Anyone unwilling to follow those rules stays in the car or stays home.

  2. 07:30–08:15

Drive to Resolute · Park’nPay · trailhead check

Park only in signed Resolute / West Head bays. Recheck alerts on arrival if you have signal. Confirm the signed Aboriginal Heritage Walk start and any temporary closures. Do not start mid-afternoon in short winter gate windows — this is a cool-hours priority walk.

  3. 08:15–11:30

Aboriginal Heritage Walk (full loop or signed short option)

Take the full ~4.4 km-class Grade 4 loop only if fitness, heat and group energy allow — verify current official distance/time. Otherwise use a shorter signed Red Hands option if available on the day. Rest in shade; hydrate before you are empty. Photograph only where permitted; never touch surfaces. Decision gate at any site: if heat or footing turns ugly, reverse on the track you know.

  4. 11:30–12:45

Lunch at Resolute · honest reassessment

Eat and rehydrate in shade. Optional short Resolute beach or track add-on only if energy and gate margin remain unanimous. Unpatrolled swimming — if in doubt, stay dry. Do not invent a second hard spur because the morning “felt easy.”

  5. 12:45–14:30

Optional Resolute / light peninsula add-on OR early exit

If margins are green and the group is still strong, a short signed Resolute option can extend the day. If anyone is limping, heat-stressed or culturally saturated, exit cleanly toward the gate. Cultural walk success does not require stacking West Head Lookout selfies.

  6. Afternoon

West Head Lookout cooldown (only if margin solid) or forced exit

If remaining gate time is generous and legs allow, finish with main lookout platforms for landscape context — barriers only, quick set of frames, then leave. Otherwise drive out with buffer. Set an alarm; do not “just watch one more bay” at lock o’clock.

Packing

  • 2 L+ water per person (more in warm weather) + electrolytes
  • Grip shoes suitable for rocky Grade 4 terrain
  • Hat, SPF, sun sleeves if exposed ridges
  • Snacks timed every 45–60 minutes
  • Basic first aid + blister kit
  • Gate-time screenshot + offline park alert notes
  • Light rain shell after wet forecasts
  • Phone power bank (coverage is patchy on some spurs)

Parking & access tips

  • Park only in signed Resolute / West Head bays — never on vegetation or track entrances.
  • Do not start mid-afternoon in short winter gate windows; reverse-plan lock time from the trailhead.
  • Weekends: arrive early; if Resolute is full, reassess whether a late start still leaves loop + exit margin.
  • Leave valuables out of sight; take water with you every step from the car.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Full loop if heat warning, fire advice tightens, or anyone is unsure on Grade 4 terrain.
  • Beach swim if conditions look rough, kids are tired, or you lack a dry-change plan.
  • America Bay or long lookout stacks after a hard cultural loop.
  • Same-day Basin ferry ambitions after this walk.
  • Solo remote pacing if you have not told someone your plan and ETA.

Extra tips

Cultural respect (non-negotiable)

  • Look only — never touch rock art, engravings, or pigment surfaces.
  • Stay on marked tracks; do not invent shortcuts between sites.
  • Quiet voices at cultural places; no climbing for “unique” photos.
  • Use public interpretive material only; do not invent or retell restricted stories.

Decision gates on West Head

  • If the first steep section already feels unsafe: reverse and choose Resolute picnic / lookout only.
  • If water is under half with more than half the loop left: turn around.
  • If gate margin collapses: cultural walk done well beats a rushed lookout add-on.
  • If fire danger elevates mid-day: exit — do not push for completion glory.
