2. Day icons vs overnight (pick one primary path)

Day trip (most first-timers)

[ ] Bobbin Head picnic + boardwalks (facilities first)
[ ] West Head Lookout with gate margin
[ ] Optional America Bay only if cool + fit + margin
[ ] Do not reverse into a late picnic after a tight gate
[ ] Partial day = successful day

The Basin overnight (booked only)

[ ] Ferry operator / last return verified (or walk-in plan honest)
[ ] Palm Beach parking plan or nearby commercial stay
[ ] Pack light if steep walk-in is Plan A or B

3. Decision tree - pick your day

First visit / one solid day Morning Bobbin Head facilities + boardwalk -> transfer -> West Head Lookout. Leave gate buffer. Skip extras if heat or kids are done.

Family / low energy / prams Bobbin Head only. Sphinx Memorial optional. West Head only if energy and traffic allow.

Views-first / photography West Head Lookout early; America Bay optional. Gate clock beats golden-hour FOMO.

Intermediate culture / tracks Aboriginal Heritage Walk or Resolute options only if Grade 4 honesty, water and gate margin agree. Public sites only - never touch rock art.

Overnight The Basin Booked camp + ferry or trained walk-in. Peak weekends sell out. Commercial Northern Beaches stay is Plan B.

Demote the plan if... Elevated fire danger, total fire ban, park alerts, heat stress, locked-gate risk, exhausted group. Bobbin-only or go home winners.

4. Gate & fire realism

West Head Road is gate-managed. Commonly cited hours differ for daylight saving vs standard time (often ~6am-8:30pm DST / ~6am-6pm otherwise) - always verify for your date. Traffic and photos eat margin. Total fire bans and park alerts can change behaviour rules or access. This planner is not a live closure feed.
