The rewrite is immediate: commercial bed confirmed, park days redesigned, Basin overnight moved to a date you can actually book. Emotional commitment to “we are definitely camping” without a confirmation number is how groups make unsafe choices.

Tell the whole group the new success metric out loud: Northern Beaches base + at least one honest park day (West Head lookout and/or Bobbin Head) + optional ferry day-visit only if green lights hold. Overnight Basin becomes a future booking, not tonight’s improvisation.

Book The Basin only through official NSW National Parks channels linked from the campground page (commonly the Basin campground listing on nationalparks.nsw.gov.au). Confirmation numbers, arrival notes and cancellation rules live there — not in a screenshot of someone else’s availability.

Never counts as a booking: third-party “holds,” cash deals at the wharf, social-media tip-offs, or walking in because “there might be space.” Peak sell-outs exist because demand is real; informal camping invents conflict with rangers and with people who booked correctly.

Fees, landing charges for boat or ferry day visitors, and how camping fees interact with those charges change. Verify current amounts on the official campground page for your date. Do not copy a dollar figure from an old blog — including older text on this site — as if it were permanent.

Annual park passes and vehicle entry systems are separate from Basin camping. Paying for a car somewhere else does not create a tent site at The Basin.

Palm Beach sits closest to Basin ferry logistics and pairs naturally with Barrenjoey / Pittwater context — and with West Head views that look back toward the same water. Avalon and Mona Vale often trade a slightly easier stay or parking story for a short drive or bus hop toward Palm Beach wharf or park roadheads.

Choose the base for the days you can still deliver: if West Head lookout is the emotional climax, sleep where an early West Head Road start is realistic. If Bobbin Head is the family win, a North Shore / Hornsby-side base may be kinder — dual-hub ambition from the wrong pillow is how days start late.

Commercial stays also absorb bad weather and fire-messaging demotions without destroying the trip narrative. Café mornings and beach walks are valid Plan B hours when park alerts say simplify.

If ferry logistics are red and you have no camping booking, do not “solve” the night with an unbooked walk-in. Walk-in via the Basin Track is steep with packs and still requires a valid booking plus West Head gate maths for trailhead parking — it is not a loophole.
